In 1989, CamelBaks founder rode in the Hotter ‘n Hell 100 in Texas.
He was an emergency medical technician by trade and filled an IV bag with water and placed it in a tube sock. The tube sock was fastened to the back of his jersey, dragged over his shoulder, and secured with a clothes pin. He took the idea to Roger Fawcett, who tested it in scientific research, and started selling the ThermalBak, the first CamelBak product, within months. This invention initially failed because riders believed it was “geeky”. Fawcett spent his final $50,000 on an advertising agency and product marketing after almost giving up. Sales soared after Barbara Mizuno coined “Hydrate or Die”.

U.S. forces fought with CamelBak goods in the Gulf War, making them popular at military exchanges. CamelBak’s defence sales increased throughout the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. U.S. and foreign government contracts comprised 40% of CamelBak’s business. Now popular with Airsofters and outdoor explorers worldwide.
