Is 2021 Tokyo Marui’s Best Year to Date?

Written By Phil Bucknall of Clearwater Airsoft.

2021 is looking to be a vintage year for Tokyo Marui, barely just 8 months into 2021 and TM are continuing to smash it out of the park. So far this year they have released a few new interesting guns including the non-blowback TM LCP pistol and TM Bodyguard 380 pistol which look really funky and will make great little concealed back up guns which could add a whole new element to games with a more role-playing aspect to them and where players can be “captured“.

Now, we have the gas blowback Tokyo Marui AKM and the electric NGRS MP5 to look forward to in the next couple of months both of which are really exciting and feature packed with innovations in both guns. The AKM has a stop fire functionality that means even if there is gas in the magazine; if there are no BBs then the gun will no longer fire.

This feature can be disabled so that dry firing can be done if required. To me this is a great feature as it replicates how a real AK functions as the bolt doesn’t hold open on an empty magazine.

Next up we have the NGRS MP5. This gun features new designs to the internals and requires the user to perform the infamous “HK slap” on the charging handle to activate the gun once a mag is either inserted or changed. Personally I am really really excited about this particular gun as I grew up watching films like die hard and love the classic lines of the MP5.

Then in July TM announced 2 more new releases. One is an iteration of the AK storm produced in a black and white colourway the other, which is far more intriguing, is a gas blowback semi automatic shotgun replicating the very popular Saiga 12. There isn’t a lot of information available yet regarding this new shotgun but from the promotional video it looks to have a good gas capacity and fires 3 BB’s with each shot.

The gas is stored in the magazine which features a temperature sensitive strip on the back which will be a huge help to determine which gas is most appropriate to use year round or it could end up being just a gimmick. We will wait and see.

If they carry on like this I cannot wait to see what’s the rest of the year holds for us.
